5 potential destinations for Kris Bryant in free agency
By John Buhler
The Seattle Mariners are close to contending, but never make the postseason
With the Seattle Mariners on the rise in the AL West, they could potentially make a big splash in free agency. Them signing Bryant becomes even more enticing with them seemingly breaking up with long-time third baseman Kyle Seager. Bryant has a championship pedigree and would provide the Mariners ample postseason experience. However, they have not sniffed October since 2001.
Kris Bryant should be a top priority for the San Francisco Giants to re-sign him
With Buster Posey retiring, one would think the San Francisco Giants would prioritize bringing back Bryant on a second contract. They can still do it, but there does not seem to be a crashing sense of urgency to do so. Last year’s team massively over performed, so a regression is expected to some degree. Then again, Bryant is still in his prime and can keep the Giants as NL contenders.
The New York Mets are more than willing to pay out the wazoo for a superstar
One would argue had Bryant not been dealt by the Cubs to the Giants, he would have gone to the New York Mets. Even though they are mired in chaos organizationally, they do love to spend money on high-priced free agents. Bryant would fit in well with New York, probably replacing his former Cubs teammate Javy Baez at the hot corner. If New York pays top dollar, Bryant is a Met.
While other teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Houston Astros could be in the Bryant sweepstakes as well to some degree, it is hard to see him playing for a team not named the Giants, Mariners or Mets in 2022.
