5 potential free agent destinations for Javy Baez
By John Buhler
The New York Mets at least know what they have in Javy Baez going forward
Given how bad of a second half it was for the Mets, it would not be shocking if New York decided to let Baez walk after his two-month run with the team. However, his inherent versatility and overall skill set is something the offensively-challenged Mets cannot overlook. It may not be a long-term extension, but punting on Baez only a few months after trading for him is bad business.
A return to the North Side is not entirely out of the question for Javy Baez
Breaking up the 2016 World Series core was especially painful for Cubs fans. However, ownership did not rule out the possibility of bringing back any of their former stars in free agency. Though Kris Bryant is probably not returning, one could argue Baez is the most likely to rejoin the Cubs a new deal. He may not be as expensive as Bryant or Anthony Rizzo, but Baez will not come cheap.
The Detroit Tigers want a shortstop and Javy Baez could end up being their guy
With the Detroit Tigers wanting to upgrade the shortstop position, one would have to expect they will end up with one of these marquee players in free agency. Though they may covet A.J. Hinch’s former player in Carlos Correa, expect for them to be in on the likes of Corey Seager and Trevor Story as well. If Correa, Seager and Story sign elsewhere, maybe Baez ends up playing for Detroit?
Baez’s market may not be as robust as other shortstops, but teams like the Blue Jays, Cubs and Tigers could really use him in their effort to get better this offseason.
