Michigan State closing in on historic extension for Mel Tucker worth nearly $100 million
Massive news has come out of East Lansing, as it looks like Mel Tucker is in line to receive a massive 10-year contract extension.
Leading up to a blockbuster showdown with No. 5 Ohio State on Saturday, No. 7 Michigan State is making headlines thanks to what could be a historic deal for head coach Mel Tucker. A deal worth almost $100 million? You’ve got that right.
According to the Detroit Free Press‘ Chris Solari and David Jesse, their sources are telling them that the Spartans are finalizing a 10-year extension with Tucker worth $95 million.
Once this deal goes through, Tucker will become the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten.
Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker is set to become one of the top paid coaches in the country
Per the Detroit Free Press, Tucker is making a little more than $5.6 million this campaign. That salary has him at No. 4 in the conference. However, with Michigan State having an unreal season, the university knew the time was right to make Tucker a happy man.
With so many jobs opening up as well, the last thing Michigan State wanted to see was a different program come in and swoop him away. Tucker has been mentioned as a candidate to potentially replace Ed Orgeron in 2022 over at LSU.
Now, Michigan State is putting the kind of money on the table that won’t have Tucker considering going anywhere else. It really has been a season to remember for MSU, highlighted by a nail-biting 37-33 win over Michigan on Oct. 30.
Now, things could be made even sweeter if the Spartans were to upset the Buckeyes this weekend. Regardless of if they get the job done or not, Tucker is all set to receive a monstrous pay raise. If you ask Michigan State fans and alumni, there’s no question he’s deserving of this.
