By Scott Rogust
Jim Harbaugh is looking for his first win against Ohio State as Michigan head coach. But what is Jim Harbaugh’s record vs. Ohio State as a player?
The Michigan Wolverines are just days away from their biggest game of the season, and it is not hyperbole. After defeating the Maryland Terrapins, Michigan is now 10-1 on the season and move on to face the rival Ohio State Buckeyes, who hold an identical record. A spot in the Big Ten Championship Game and the College Football Playoff hangs in the balance.
Jim Harbaugh has not had any luck against Ohio State as the head coach of Michigan, going 0-5. But how did Harbaugh perform as a player against Ohio State?
What is Jim Harbaugh’s record against Ohio State as a player?
Harbaugh played for Michigan from 1983 until 1986. So technically Harbaugh holds a 3-1 record against the Wolverines. But, he was actually only on the field for the 1985 and 1986 games when he was the starting quarterback.
Here is how the head-to-head meetings played out:
- 1983: Michigan beat Ohio State 24-21
- 1984: Ohio State beat Michigan 21-6
- 1985: Michigan beat Ohio State 27-17
- 1986: Michigan beat Ohio State 26-24
In the 1985 game, Harbaugh completed 16-of-19 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns. And, of course, 1986 was the game in which Harbaugh guaranteed the Wolverines would beat the Buckeyes and make the Rose Bowl. Turns out, his bold prediction became a reality.
