The New York Mets are very interested in signing Max Scherzer in his free agency this winter.

One MLB insider shares the New York Mets are doing their very best to sign right-handed starter Max Scherzer in his free agency.

Jon Heyman of the MLB Network reports the Mets are determined to add a frontline starter to their rotation this offseason. They have reportedly prioritized Scherzer, Kevin Gausman and Robbie Ray, in that order. While incumbent right-handed Marcus Stroman is still in the mix to return to some degree, the Mets have made it be known what their preferences are for this offseason cycle.

With Scherzer prioritizing winning above all else, would the right-hander come to New York?

Scherzer may have won a World Series with the 2019 Washington Nationals, but he does not have all that many more stabs at getting back to the Fall Classic and winning it. While he was traded from the Nationals to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the deadline, Scherzer and the Boys in Blue were unable to win the NL Pennant in back-to-back seasons. They fell in six to the Atlanta Braves.

Though one could argue that the Mets are one good offseason from getting back into contention, it is not like the Braves or the Philadelphia Phillies are fading any time soon. The pathway toward the postseason has to be through winning one’s division. Though the Mets led the NL East throughout much of the summer, they collapsed down the stretch and missed the postseason.

While money talks, it is hard to see Scherzer being as interested in the Mets as they are in him.
