Top 30 duos in NFL history
27. Bob Griese and Paul Warfield
The Dolphins of the 1970s may have been a very run-heavy team, but Griese and Warfield were a dynamic connection.
Warfield joined the Dolphins in 1970 after spending most of the 1960s with the Cleveland Browns. He was a Pro Bowler every year from 1970-74, and was named All-Pro twice. He only caught 28 passes in 1970, but he had 703 yards and six touchdowns, good for an average of 25 yards per reception. In ’71, Warfield led the NFL in touchdown receptions with 11 and was named All-Pro. Griese was also named All-Pro in 1971, throwing for just under 2,100 yards and 19 touchdowns.
In the Dolphins perfect season of 1972, Griese only played in six games due to a season-ending injury. Warfield was once again a Pro Bowler that year after having over 600 yards receiving. Warfield had 11 touchdowns the next season in 1973, and Griese was named a Pro Bowler after throwing 17 touchdowns.
The Dolphins were the best team of the early 1970s. While they had a dynamic ground attack and great defenses, Griese and Warfield were exactly what the offense needed to give them a slight air attack.
