Willson Contreras ignites trade rumors to Cardinals with Twitter activity after Cubs sign Yan Gomes
By Thomas Erbe
Could Willson Contreras be the next big-name player traded by the Chicago Cubs?
The Chicago Cubs signed catcher Yan Gomes to a two-year deal on Tuesday. This was the first big league move they’ve made in free agency this year.
The problem is the Cubs already have a catcher, and that catcher is currently looking for an extension before he hits free agency after 2022. Willson Contreras might be a bit frustrated with the team, and he has had an interesting day on Twitter.

Willson Contreras is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The Cubs originally had an interest in extending him, but talks have gone silent between the team and player.
At the 2021 trade deadline, the Cubs traded fan favorites Kris Bryant, Javy Baez and Anthony Rizzo to signal they were ready to start over.
However, they did not call it a rebuild, but rather a retooling. They said they would be active in free agency to build the next championship-caliber team. However, things are happening a bit differently than that.
Cubs’ Willson Contreras likes tweet referencing going to the Cardinals
It gets worse, Cubs fans. Contreras then liked a reply tweet to an article that spells out extension talks being quiet between him and the Cubs. It referenced him going to St. Louis to replace Yadi Molina after he retires.
He liked that reply. He’s trolled on Twitter before, but this seems like a different time to do it.
What will come of this? Will Contreras be traded or extended? Will he play through his contract in 2021 and become a free agent? Will he sign with the Cubs’ biggest rival to throw it back in their face? Time will tell, but if Cubs fans do not get the answers they want and fast, the North Side could erupt in anger.
