What does the College Football Playoff picture look like if Georgia loses to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game?

In a clash of SEC titans, multiple College Football Playoff berths are on the line, especially if No. 3 Alabama holds on to beat No. 1 Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

With Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young securing the Heisman Trophy with an incredible performance vs. the vaunted Dawgs defense, it is hard seeing Kirby Smart beating his mentor Nick Saban in Atlanta on Saturday evening. While Kirby Smart’s team makes the College Football Playoff no matter what the final score of this game is, a loss to the Crimson Tide impacts the playoff picture.

What would the potential College Football Playoff field look like if the Crimson Tide beat the Dawgs yet again?

College Football Playoff rankings: What happens if Alabama beats Georgia?

  1. Alabama Crimson Tide
  2. Georgia Bulldogs
  3. Michigan Wolverines
  4. Cincinnati Bearcats

With an SEC Championship win over the Dawgs, the Crimson Tide would propel up from No. 3 all the way to the top spot. While a defeat will sting throughout the rest of December, the Dawgs will only drop as far as No. 2 or No. 3 in the next College Football Playoff Rankings. Georgia would face one-loss Big Ten Champion Michigan, while Alabama draws undefeated AAC Champion Cincinnati.

As far as where these national semifinals will be played, Alabama would choose between the Orange Bowl and the Cotton Bowl to face Cincinnati. Whatever New Year’s Six bowl top-seeded Alabama chooses, Georgia would face Michigan in the other bowl. If Georgia beat Michigan, a potential rematch vs. Alabama could take place in the national championship game.

The College Football Selection Committee will not force an immediate rematch between Alabama and Georgia in the national semifinals under any logical circumstances.
