Notre Dame football head coach Marcus Freeman made a not-so-subtle jab at the Chicago Bears when asked what he learned from his short time with the organization.

Marcus Freeman may have a new, sweet gig leading the Notre Dame football operation, but the Fighting Irish’s head coach may have bit off more than he can chew when poking the Chicago Bears in hilarious fashion.

Freeman will be 36-years-old in a few weeks and has already landed one of the best gigs college football could ever hope to offer anyone. However, people tend to forget that he was briefly a practice squad-level player for a year with three organizations coming out of Ohio State, including the 2009 Bears. Let’s just say his brief time with Chicago left an indelible impression on the coach.

While this quote is hilarious, keep in mind that these two rabid fanbases do overlap a good bit.

Let’s be real. Freeman’s brief time with the Bears coincided with mediocrity. The team went 7-9 that season and didn’t make the NFC playoffs for the third year in a row. While they did qualify for them a year later and hosted the 2010 NFC Championship game, Freeman was already back in Columbus working as a grad assistant for Jim Tressel. He had already turned the page on the NFL.

While there is still time for Freeman to go back to the NFL if he feels so inclined, why would he ever want to? Again, he has an elite Power Five job at Notre Dame well before his 40th birthday. If all goes according to plan for him in South Bend, Freeman will bring the Golden Domers something they have not had in almost as long as the Bears franchise: An undisputed championship victory.

If Freeman learned how to lose from the Bears, then maybe that was a lesson well learned by him.
