New Oklahoma football head coach Brent Venables is a recruiting wizard by getting four-star linebacker Kobie McKinzie to flip back to OU after committing to Texas only eight days ago.

Brent Venables made it a point to mess with Texas upon being named the Oklahoma football head coach.

Venables came to Norman by way of Clemson. He got former OU commit Kobie McKinzie to flip back to the Sooners after committing to Texas only … eight days ago. The Lubbock, Texas native had been committed to Oklahoma up until Lincoln Riley left for USC. While flipping to Texas made sense, at least initially, Venables was able to get McKinzie to recommit to play for the Sooners.

With Early Signing Day on Wednesday, there is not enough time for McKinzie to flip once again.

If your head is spinning after trying to follow along with McKinzie’s recruitment, you are not alone. In fact, this is the third time he has decommitted from a Big 12 school. The Lubbock native initially committed to the hometown Texas Tech Red Raiders back in 2019. He decommitted before pledging his allegiance to Oklahoma. After a fun with week with Texas, it became an annulment.

So what is Oklahoma getting for a second time in McKinzie’s commitment? According to the 247Sports Composite, he is the No. 144 player in the 2022 recruiting class, the No. 13 linebacker in the country and the No. 24 overall player from the state of Texas. By recommitting to Oklahoma, it is clear that Venables sees him as a valued defensive piece ahead of their big move to the SEC.

It may take a year, but it seems as though Oklahoma will be fine in recruitment under Venables.
