Utah State backup quarterback Cooper Legas was called into action after an injury and hit a dime of a touchdown on his first career attempt.

Coaches always talk about the importance of backups preparing like they’re the starter.

Utah State’s Cooper Legas proved he was more than ready when an injury to starter Logan Bonner forced him into action for the first time in his career.

His first ever attempt was an absolute dime of a pass to Deven Thompkins for a 62-yard touchdown to tie Oregon State in the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl.

Utah State head coach Blake Anderson revealed during a halftime interview with ESPN that Legas checked into that play himself.

It was a perfect example of a quarterback knowing exactly what he needed to know, having the confidence to check the play, then hitting the pass perfectly.

After the touchdown bomb to tie, Legas led another touchdown drive of 11 plays and 85 yards. Calvin Tyler Jr. finished it off with a 15-yard touchdown run. As a result, the Aggies went into halftime leading their Pac-12 opponent 14-10.

Anderson said Bonner was questionable for the second half because of a knee injury so Legas will have more opportunities to show what he’s got.

Legas won two state championships in high school on the football field. He also won two titles as a javelin thrower and wrestler. He was a three-star quarterback prospect for the class of 2019, ranking No. 2,277 in the 247Sports composite.
