Duke basketball: 50 best players to play for Coach K
7. J.J. Redick (2002-2006)
J.J. Redick was one of the most hated Duke players of all time by non-Duke fans but is one of the most beloved players of all time by Duke fans. Part of the reason he was so loved by Duke fans is because of the incredible career he had in Durham, the personal accolades he accomplished during his time with the Blue Devils, and also the team accomplishments he helped achieve.
During his time with Duke, the Blue Devils made it to a Final Four, won two ACC Regular Season titles, three ACC Tournament titles, and made it to the Sweet Sixteen all four years. Part of the reason was Redick’s outstanding play — he held a four-year average of 19.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.1 steals.
Redick’s best season came in his 2005-06 senior year when he averaged 26.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. Over the course of his four seasons, Redick was named the AP Player of the Year once, won the Naismith and Wooden Awards once each, won the Rupp Trophy twice, was the two-time ACC Player of the Year, was a two-time consensus All-American, was the two-time ACC Tournament MVP, received All-ACC honors four times, and was named to the All-ACC Tournament team three times as well.
After graduating from Duke in 2006, Redick was selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic and would play 15 seasons in the NBA averaging 12.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game, with an incredible 41.5 career 3-point percentage.
