The Gasparilla Bowl featured a Sunshine State showdown between Florida and UCF but also an absolutely wild scene with helmets getting stuck together.

Two programs from the state of Florida made the trip to Tampa for the Gasparilla Bowl on Thursday night as the Florida Gators were set to take on the UCF Knights.

For Gus Malzahn’s Knights, this was a chance to make a statement. It was a down year in Orlando — particularly with the loss of Dillon Gabriel to injury — but they had the opportunity to beat an SEC team that, frankly, has not been willing to play them. As for those Gators, many fans questioned their desire to be in this game with a starting quarterback set to transfer and during a transition on the coaching staff.

Regardless of the stakes for the Gasparilla Bowl, though, it gave us a wild scene in the first quarter.

During a wild play, UCF offensive lineman Cole Schneider somehow got a Gators player’s helmet stuck to his, connected at the facemasks. What resulted was a bit of a circus as everyone tried to figure out how to separate the helmets.

That’s certainly not something you see every day — but leave it to bowl season to give us that.

With that said, the hilarious incident might’ve been the most excitement fans got to see in the first quarter. Florida’s offense looked disinterested at several points (particularly on the offensive line) and the UCF attack didn’t have anything cooking of note either.

If nothing else, though, at least we’ll always have the helmet ordeal to remember the Gasparilla Bowl by.
