Things went from bad to worse when a Washington fight broke out on the sideline between teammates Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne.

The Washington Football Team brought its own benches to Dallas on Sunday night, but didn’t bring much else. The offense sputtered out of the gate against a stout Cowboys defense, and the only fight Washington showed was on its own sideline.

After a particularly poor defensive series, frustrations boiled over into a mini-brawl between Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne.

NBC cameras caught a confrontation on the Washington bench that, as Cris Collinsworth and Ron Burgundy both put it, escalated quickly.

Payne is seen very clearly getting into Allen’s face, who is trying to keep his cool but loses it once his teammate pokes him in the head. It was this poke that set Allen off, who got up and decked Payne before being separated by other members of the defensive line sitting near them.

Washington fight: Jonathan Allen decks Daron Payne on WFT sideline

Allen and Payne have a long history together that goes beyond their years in Washington. Both are former college teammates at Alabama, which means neither are accustomed to the type of miserable losing they’ve been subjected to in Washington.

It goes without saying, but Daniel Snyder is not Nick Saban.

Michelle Tafoya reported on the NBC broadcast that it wasn’t clear what had started the fight, but tempers had been boiling all night. It’s no surprise either player was hot under the collar considering the putrid effort being put forth on national television, one that saw Washington surrender over 30-points in the first half alone.

If only Allen and Payne had shown as much fight on the field as they did on the Washington sideline.
