30 best nicknames in NFL history
19. “Matty Ice” Matt Ryan
Matt Ryan could have another nickname- “under-appreciated Falcons quarterback.” Ryan has been a model of consistency ever since he came into the league in 2008.
As a rookie, he took a terrible team and got them to 11-5 and in the playoffs. From 2008-12, the Falcons didn’t have a losing record. Ryan made his first Pro Bowl in 2010. He threw for 3,705 yards and 28 touchdowns and the Falcons went 13-3. In 2012, yan led the NFL in completion percentage with 68.6 percent completions. He also threw for over 4,700 yards and 32 touchdowns and he made it to the second Pro Bowl.
Ryan won the NFL MVP in 2016. That season, he threw for 4,944 yards and 38 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. The Falcons went to the Super Bowl that season, and the less said about how that ended, the better. Mostly because everyone has seen and heard about it enough over the last four years.
Unfortunately for Ryan, he was the victim of horrid clock management and play-calling after the Falcons held a 28-3 lead. While the Falcons are in the midst of a partial rebuild, Ryan is still playing well and in the hunt for a playoff appearance.
