Alabama football is the preeminent college football program of the 21st century. How many national championships have the Crimson Tide won in total?

The Alabama Crimson Tide have dominated college football over the last 10 years and in decades past.

They haven’t always been at the top of the mountain, but they’ve made it their home often enough to be one of the most successful programs in college football history.

With the 2021 title in the balance, how many titles have the Tide won already?

Alabama claims 18 national titles with an additional five going unclaimed. Of course, some of those are more valid than others.

The 1941 title involved a two-loss Crimson Tide team. Minnesota was a more consensus champion. In 1964, the Tide lost in the Orange Bowl while Arkansas went undefeated. The 1973 title was bestowed by the Coaches’ Poll before Alabama lost to undefeated Notre Dame. In 1978, the national championship was split between Alabama and USC despite the Trojans beating the Tide during the regular season.

Only Princeton and Yale claim more titles with 28 and 27 respectively.

However, Alabama has the most titles in the poll era, as awarded by the AP and Coaches. They also have the most titles in the BCS and Playoff eras.

Before Nick Saban turned up, Paul “Bear” Bryant was the most successful coach in Alabama football history. He won six national championships claimed by the school.

Bryant’s first title came in 1961 and his last in 1979.
