Cincinnati football star Coby Bryant will honor the late Kobe Bryant during the Cotton Bowl.

Ahead of the biggest game of his life, Cincinnati football player Coby Bryant will pay tribute to the person he was named after, honoring the late Kobe Bryant during the Cotton Bowl.

No. 4 Cincinnati may be the last undefeated team in the country, but the Bearcats will be up against it when they take on the top-seeded Alabama Crimson Tide in their national semifinal game. Bryant is one of the best players on Cincinnati’s roster, as he took home the Jim Thorpe as the best defensive back in the country. Of course, he will need to channel that Mamba Mentality.

Coby will be wearing Kobe’s No. 8 instead of his typical No. 7 jersey to honor him.

Using an extra year of eligibility because of COVID, Bryant returned to Cincinnati with huge aspirations. The Bearcats may have won the Group of Five a year ago, but they missed out on a perfect season by falling to the Georgia Bulldogs in the final minute of the Peach Bowl. All Bryant did upon returning was help his team do the impossible: Make the 2022 College Football Playoff.

Because Coby Bryant was born around the same time Kobe Bryant was ascending to superstardom with the Los Angeles Lakers, it is easy to see the connection to his obvious namesake. It has been nearly two years since the Black Mamba left us, but his legacy transcends sports. With his lucky No. 8 jersey, maybe Bryant and Cincinnati can do the impossible once again?

If Cincinnati were to win the Cotton Bowl over Alabama, the Bearcats would face the winner of the Orange Bowl between Michigan and Georgia in the national championship game in Indianapolis.
