New year, same awful quarterback play in the early-afternoon window on an NFL Sunday.

It may be 2022 now, but the NFL will never be able to overcome horrendous quarterback play that is commonplace in the early-afternoon time slot.

Like clockwork, signal-callers put forth 60 minutes of bad tape that nobody will enjoy watching later. It may be a combination of a journeyman playing for a dumpster fire organization or a young up-and-comer who has clearly hit the rookie wall with his rebuilding team. Either way, it is virtually impossible for all 32 NFL franchise to get competent quarterback play in a given week.

Here are three quarterbacks who made need to grab some pine after how NFL Week 17 went.

NFL Week 17: 3 starting quarterbacks who might need to be benched

A horrific game by Tua Tagovailoa might cost the Miami Dolphins a playoff spot

While Sunday was a very tough spot for the Miami Dolphins playing the AFC South champion Tennessee Titans in Nashville, this was not a game Tua Tagovailoa should be proud of one bit. Tagovailoa was every bit outclassed by his quarterbacking counterpart in Ryan Tannehill. By falling 34-3 on the road to the Titans, the 8-8 Dolphins’ playoff chances are on life support at this time.

Tagovailoa completed 18-of-38 passes for 205 yards and an interception. He was sacked four times, put the ball on the ground three times and lost one fumble. The Miami offense could only manage a field goal in a game they had to have. While Brian Flores is not going to bench Tagovailoa heading into Week 18’s home game vs. the New England Patriots, it’s not looking good.

He clearly has the third best quarterback in his draft class. Tagovailoa is usually not this horrendous when it comes to ball security, but he has an incredibly finite ceiling as an NFL starting quarterback. In his first full year as the starter and his second in the league, Miami has to accept it drafted the Alabama version of Sam Bradford. Let’s hope Mac Jones does not score 50 on them.

Tagovailoa is more and more likely to not get the fifth-year option to stick with the Dolphins.
