5 ideal transfer destinations for Oklahoma QB Caleb Williams
3. Penn State Nittany Lions
Penn State fans and college football media seemingly had a mixed reaction to the announcement that quarterback Sean Clifford would be returning to Happy Valley for another season with the Nittany Lions. Despite the fact that he’s won plenty of games at the helm of the offense, the fact of the matter is that his limitations are abundantly apparent.
Clifford has solid but far from elite mobility and that would be a proper way to describe him as a passer as well. The point of saying that, though, is that you’d be hard-pressed to find many logical Penn State fans who feel wholly confident in Clifford when he needs to come up with big plays in the biggest games against the best competition.
Though Caleb Williams is young, he could turn that feeling on its head if he were to look at Penn State as a potential option. The Nittany Lions were a program that was actually one of Williams’ final five choices as a recruit, so he’s clearly familiar with James Franklin and his staff there, enough so to once make them one of his top considerations.
It would be a tough break for Clifford and you do have to wonder if Franklin would turn his back on the long-time starter, so to speak — but if it means a better chance for Penn State to make a leap and compete atop the Big Ten, it’s something that both the program and Williams would have to take a long look at.
