3 worst calls of Week 18: Unnecessary roughness on Patriots

On a fake punt called by Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, punter Michael Palardy ran towards the sidelines and the first-down marker. A Patriots defender was about to lay him out, but whiffed on his attempt to do so.

Had the Patriots made contact, it undoubtedly would’ve been unnecessary roughness and a 15-yard penalty. The only issue? Palardy was untouched, as he slid under the contact.

Is the intent to rough a player enough to throw a flag nowadays?

The Dolphins would go on to defeat the Patriots, but it wouldn’t save Flores’ job. Despite being one of the better defensive minds on the coaching market, Flores was surprisingly canned on Monday morning.
