NFL Twitter roasting Texans for considering Hines Ward for head coach

The Houston Texans interviewed Steelers great Hines Ward for their open head coaching position and NFL Twitter couldn’t believe it.
The NFL head coach search process can go a lot of directions. It can lead teams to unexpected places even.
It’s just hard to imagine a more unexpected place than the Texans revealed on Saturday.
Houston announced interviews with two candidates for their head coaching position: Chargers offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and Florida Atlantic wide receivers coach Hines Ward.
Yes, that Hines Ward.
The Texans interviewed Hines Ward and Twitter roasted them for it
Ward was a standout wide receiver with the Steelers, so he’s no stranger in NFL circles. However, a lot of people didn’t even know he was coaching.
As a college “special assistant to the head coach” and wide receivers coach, he’s not exactly the first name people would have guessed to be getting head coaching interviews.
That really says Hines Ward, doesn't it? Like, I'm not hallucinating. https://t.co/qHH0F63HwD

Hines Ward?! I legit thought this was a fake Texans account. https://t.co/B8MAxGNC1m

Well….I would have to imagine that Hines Ward would be the first coach to ever go from “Group of Five wide receivers coach" to "NFL head coach” if he gets the Texas job. https://t.co/pgaWif60Iu

I mean that'd be sick. Love Hines Ward. But I know nothing about his coaching acumen.

I do know that going from Wide Receivers Coach at Florida Atlantic to NFL Head Coach is like putting all your chips on Green. https://t.co/RVgjnKqbMs

Hines Ward coached under Adam Gase so if he does the exact opposite of everything Gase did, he will be successful. #Texans https://t.co/1dhS9zCEdY

Hines Ward is a special assistant to the head coach at Florida Atlantic University. Before that, he was an offensive assistant for the Jets for two years. Have to think the Texans have another position in mind for Ward than HC.

Ward does have some NFL coaching experience, though it is very limited. He was an offensive assistant with the New York Jets in 2019 and 2020. He was hired by FAU under Willie Taggart in 2021.
His career with the Steelers spaned from 1998 to 2011. The former third-round draft selection won two Super Bowls in Pittsburgh and was the MVP of Super Bowl XL. He made the Pro Bowl four times.
When Ward retired from the NFL after the 2011 season, he had 1,000 receptions and 12,083 yards to his name. He caught 85 touchdowns.
Ward may get a head coaching opportunity at some point down the line and completely warrant the interview. For now, his name being mentioned as an NFL head coaching candidate is pretty wild.
Next. Texans owe David Culley a lot of money. dark
