The productive defender got a little banged up on Sunday in the playoff win at Dallas. What’s the latest on San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner?

San Francisco 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan has had a pretty good defensive unit the last few years. There were obvious questions this offseason when coordinator Robert Saleh moved on to become the head coach of the New York Jets.

Enter DeMeco Ryans and this side of the ball performed efficiently. Getting defensive end Nick Bosa back after he missed all but two games a year ago was huge. In 2020, San Francisco allowed the fifth-fewest total yards in the league. This year, only two teams gave up fewer yards per game.

The Niners took their 10-7 record to Dallas on Sunday and Shanahan’s club held on for a 23-17 victory. But fourth-year linebacker Fred Warner went down in the second quarter with an ankle injury. He had already racked up five tackles and did not return to the contest.

Understandably, there was concern that the team’s leading tackler each of these last four seasons would not be available for this weekend’s NFC Divisional Round clash with the Green Bay Packers. But Warner appeared to put those fears aside.

49ers: Fred Warner injury scare looks like a thing of the past

The 2018 third-round pick from BYU has started every game for the team the past four seasons. He’s totaled at least 100 stops each year.

While he has a modest three interceptions, he’s totaled a solid 25 passes defended over that span. Add in 4.5 sacks and six fumble recoveries and the rangy defender has made his mark, earning Pro Bowl and All-Pro accolades in 2020.

When the Packers won at San Francisco on Sunday night in Week 3, Warner finished with nine tackles in his club’s 30-28 setback. And he figures to be very busy at Lambeau Field on Sunday evening trying to stop Aaron Rodgers, Aaron Jones, Davante Adams and the very-balanced Green Bay attack.
