Former Georgia defensive back Ameer Speed reunites with his former defensive coordinator Mel Tucker by transferring to Michigan State.

It has come full circle for Ameer Speed, as the former Georgia cornerback opted to transfer to Michigan State to play for his former defensive coordinator Mel Tucker in East Lansing.

The Jacksonville native was highly sought-after coming out of high school. Speed was part of Georgia’s 2017 recruiting class when Tucker was still in Athens. After playing in 48 games over five seasons in Athens for Kirby Smart, Speed uses his sixth-year eligibility from the COVID year to venture up to East Lansing to play for Tucker. This is a massive get for Michigan State in the portal.

“Coach Tucker and Coach Barnett are two people I wanted to work with when I came out of high school,” said Speed in a statement on Tuesday. “I knew that they could develop me into the man and the player that I strived to be. So to have the opportunity to be coached by the two is a true blessing.”

Here is Speed’s tweet about his decision to leave Athens and go suit up for the Spartans.

Michigan State lands former Georgia CB Ameer Speed in transfer portal

A big reason behind the Spartan’s overwhelming success last year was Tucker hitting one home run after another in the transfer portal. No transfer was more impactful for Michigan State than former Wake Forest running back Kenneth Walker III. The unanimous All-American took home the Doak Walker and the Walter Camp during his one unforgettable season playing for the Spartans.

Getting a proven SEC starter in Speed in the portal should go a long way towards fixing the Spartans’ biggest issue from the season prior: Pass defense. Speed will be bringing the SEC speed to the Big Ten. He has sharpened his iron going up against the elite competition in practice while at Georgia. This is a tremendous opportunity for Speed to be a leader and make an indelible impact.

If Michigan State crushes it in the transfer portal again, they will be a force to be reckoned with.
