The Kentucky Wildcats landed a big name in the transfer portal: Former Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Javon Baker.

While on opposite sides of the SEC, Kentucky football poached a former 4-star recruit and National Champion in Baker.

Baker didn’t see a lot of action in his two seasons with the Crimson Tide, likely prompting the change of scenery. It’s tough to blame him for the lack of production given the litany of receivers Nick Saban’s team often has at their disposal.

Baker announced his decision on Instagram.

With Laim Coen as offensive coordinator and Will Levis at quarterback, Baker is a substantial vertical threat that could change the outlook of the Kentucky offense.

Baker has been compared to former Alabama wideout Calvin Ridley as recently as 2021. 247’s Charles Power gave him that evaluation:

“Lean, square-shouldered build that should aid in putting on mass once he gets to the next level. Tests as a solid athlete at this juncture with short area burst being his best trait in that department. Is a strong-handed pass catcher who plays with a confidence when the ball is in the air. Is at his best in contested catch situations,” Power wrote.

Kentucky has lost wideouts Wan’Dale Robinson and Josh Ali from last year’s roster, as well as Isaiah Epps. Baker and former Virginia Tech wide receiver Tayvion Robinson were brought in to help replace that production, and should receive playing time right away.
