Ole Miss trying to land Georgia transfers JT Daniels, Jermaine Burton
By John Buhler
Ole Miss football head coach Lane Kiffin is hoping to add former Georgia football stars JT Daniels and Jermaine Burton to his Rebels squad.
When Georgia football stars JT Daniels and Jermaine Burton entered the transfer portal, Ole Miss football head coach Lane Kiffin decided he needed to make a recruiting trip to Athens.
Kiffin tweeted out a photo of him arriving at Athens Ben Epps Airport on Thursday. Accompanied with a dog emoji, Kiffin wanted to try his luck to see if he can get Georgia’s backup quarterback and one of the Dawgs’ better wide receivers to come to Oxford.
Daniels and Burton entered the transfer portal this week, coinciding with 2021 starting quarterback Stetson Bennett IV announcing he will be using his COVID year and returning for one last ride in the Classic City.
Though Burton and Daniels are native Californians, it would make a great deal of sense if they became Rebel Dawgs and joined Kiffin’s cause over in the SEC West.
Ole Miss football program keen on adding JT Daniels, Jermaine Burton in portal
Ole Miss is coming off a fantastic 10-win season in Kiffin’s second year on the job. The Rebels reached a New Year’s Six bowl. While they fell to Baylor in New Orleans, that had more to do with starting quarterback Matt Corral getting hurt more than anything. Ole Miss must replace Corral, who has entered the NFL Draft. He projects as a first-round pick, possibly going in the top 10.
And that is where things get interesting. Ole Miss does have a promising rising sophomore quarterback in Luke Altmyer, but the Starkville native is still incredibly raw. The Rebels have long been a team that would look to add a high-profile passer in the transfer portal, especially with it being a forgone conclusion that Corral would be turning pro after his stellar junior year at Ole Miss.
For Daniels, this is all about salvaging his once-promising NFL stock. Getting benched in favor of Bennett removed all doubt that he needed to return to school for one more year. As for Burton, he may want to play in an offense that uses the vertical passing game more. In Kiffin’s passing-centric offense, this could be an ideal fit for all parties involved. Burton and Daniels may be Rebels.
If Ole Miss can get Burton and Daniels in a package deal, the Rebels should remain a top-25 program this fall in what was thought to be a rebuilding year for the team.
