Subriel Matias avenged his lone loss by stopping Petros Ananyan via round 9 TKO in a brutal bout that saw Ananyan badly battered.

The super lightweight rematch between Subriel Matias and Petros Ananyan on Saturday, Jan. 22, had a Fight of the Year type of feel, but Matias got his revenge.

The first contest between Matias and Ananyan in 2020 saw Ananyan taking over the second half of the fight to pull out a unanimous decision, although the scores were close on two of the three cards. However, Ananyan couldn’t go the distance the second time around.

Fighting at the Borgata in Atlantic City, NJ, Matias displayed incredible power as he broke down Ananyan over nine rounds.

Matias (18-1, 18 KOs) threw punishing punches throughout the fight. The 29-year-old from Puerto Rico put a beating on Ananyan, and the damage showed on Ananyan’s face. Ananyan’s nose leaked blood, and his eyes were swollen, but he kept coming forward and throwing punches.

Subriel Matias vs. Petros Ananyan 2 produced an epic round 7, but Matias stopped the overmatched Ananyan in round 9

Matias owned the first five rounds, but the tempo shifted in round 6. Ananyan was more accurate, and he pushed Matias back. In round 7, Matias lost a point for a low blow but responded with urgency by upping his punch output. He blitzed Ananyan with shots to the head, and Ananyan returned fire in an amazing round of action.

Ananyan started to wilt in round 8, and he went down towards the end of round 9 from a Matias left hook that landed on his chin. Ananyan beat the count and was saved by the bell but was wary.

The doctor ran Ananyan through several tests in his corner and decided he couldn’t continue. It was a good call. He took too many clean punches and was in danger of severe injury.

Matias avenged his lone loss and can now say that he has knocked out every opponent he has faced. Ananyan’s career appears to have stalled, and the 33-year-old might never be the same after this fight.

Matias made a statement and looks like one of the most fearsome super lightweights in boxing.
