Mike Bobo returns to Georgia as part of Kirby Smart’s coaching staff

The Georgia football program welcomes back one of their own, as former quarterback and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo returns in an offensive analyst role on Kirby Smart’s staff.

Mike Bobo reunites with former college teammates Kirby Smart and Will Muschamp as an offensive analyst on Coach Smart’s staff.

Bobo, who had most recently been the offensive coordinator at Auburn, followed Muschamp’s footsteps back to Athens. Muschamp had been let go by South Carolina before rejoining the Dawgs in a defensive analyst role last year. As with Bobo, Muschamp has a son who is on the team. Their former head coach Ray Goff, who signed all three in the 1990s, is giddy over this.

“I’m just tickled to death,” said Goff to Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I really like all those guys, and it’s really good to have Mike back. They were good young men then, and they’re really good men now.”

This is fantastic news for Georgia on so many levels. Getting Bobo back cannot be understated.

By hiring Bobo as an offensive analyst, it will help offset Georgia potentially losing offensive coordinator Todd Monken to a Power 5 job of his own if the Dawgs have a great 2022 campaign. Muschamp is expected to be promoted, especially after defensive coordinator Dan Lanning took over at Oregon. He also stepped up big time coaching special teams last season for Scott Cochran.

Not only is Bobo back in the building, but he was an outstanding recruiter when he was running the offense for Mark Richt. Bobo may have left for Fort Collins nearly a decade ago, but he had been on Muschamp’s South Carolina staff before spending a minute working for Bryan Harsin down on The Plains. More importantly, he is not coordinating another SEC team’s offense now.
