30 greatest players to never win a Super Bowl
21. Terrell Owens, WR, San Francisco 49ers/Philadelphia Eagles
If you came here looking for a discussion on why wide receiver Terrell Owens belongs or doesn’t belong in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, you may as well move onto the next slide. The controversial performer is still waiting for the call from Canton and you would think that one day, based on his amazing production, that we find his bust in the building one day.
One thing you certainly can’t dispute is that the third-round draft choice by the San Francisco 49ers from Tennessee-Chattanooga in 1996 is one of 14 players in NFL history with 1,000 or more receptions. He ranks eighth in league annals with 1,078 catches, second behind only Jerry Rice with 15,934 receiving yards while only Rice (197) and Randy Moss (156) have totaled more touchdown grabs (153).
His 156 total touchdowns is topped only by Rice (208), Emmitt Smith (175) and LaDainian Tomlinson (162). Owens is a six-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro who suited up for a total of five teams – the 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals.
That’s an awful lot of numbers. And lest we forget 12 postseason games with the Niners, Birds and ‘Boys in which he caught 54 passes for 751 yards and five scores. Owens came up with a big-time gut-check performance with the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX as the hurting pro pulled down nine passes for 122 yards in Philadelphia’s loss to the Patriots. But that’s as close as the often-discussed pass-catcher came to winning an NFL title.
