What former Michigan football coach Josh Gattis texted some of his players after leaving for Miami speaks volumes.

When former offensive coordinator Josh Gattis left the Michigan football program to go be the Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator, it sent shockwaves throughout the college football world.

Gattis helped transform the Wolverines’ offense last year, winning the Broyles Award for the best assistant in the country. While he had been a candidate for the Virginia Cavaliers job that ultimately went to former Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott, there was some support internally Gattis could have replaced Jim Harbaugh if he left for an NFL job.

Then again, Gattis’ text message sent to some of his former players paints a different picture.

Here is the text message Gattis reportedly sent to some of his former Michigan players.

"“Unfortunately the past few weeks has told a different story to me about the very little appreciation I have here from administration. In life I would never advise anyone to be where they are not wanted…”"

For him to say he did not feel wanted when many outsiders truly believed Gattis would be promoted from within to replace Harbaugh is shocking. Michigan does not win the Big Ten or get to the College Football Playoff without Gattis’ great work last season. While Harbaugh went off to be a flirt in Minnesota on National Signing Day, he lost both of his coordinators in the process.

Though Mike Macdonald has a strong working relationship with Harbaugh’s older brother John in Baltimore, Gattis departing for Miami to work for Mario Cristobal shows how hurt he was by this Michigan coaching debacle. The good news for him is he joins a new Hurricanes staff that features an elite recruiter as the face of it, as well as an outstanding defensive coordinator in Kevin Steele.

While quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss could be promoted, there is plenty of offensive talent that remains in Ann Arbor.
