Texas basketball has gone a long time without winning a championship on both the Longhorn men’s and women’s side of things.

Texas basketball took a swing to hire Texas Tech’s Chris Beard when they parted ways with Shaka Smart after six seasons.

Beard has the Longhorns ranked in the Top 25 and is gearing up for a March Madness appearance in his first year but the ultimate goal is to take the men to the top of the tournament.

The women are in their second season with Vic Schaefer at the help and hoping to build on an Elite Eight appearance last year.

Has Texas basketball ever won a championship?

Yes, the Longhorns have won a championship each in men’s and women’s play though the latter was far more recent and official.

  • 1933 men’s Premo-Porretta Power Poll national championship*
  • 1986 women’s NCAA Division I Tournament championship

*The Premo-Porretta Power Poll bestowed retroactive championships for pre-NCAA Tournament years.
