Why did Joe Burrow say his high school during his Super Bowl 56 introduction? Did he graduate from LSU or from Ohio State?

During the team introductions for Super Bowl 56, NFL fans might have been confused when Joe Burrow said Athens High School.

Didn’t he go to LSU?

In fact, he did win a national title with the Tigers but he chose to shout out his high school instead.

At the same time, Burrow didn’t get his bachelor’s degree at LSU.

Did Joe Burrow graduate from Ohio State?

Burrow started his career at Ohio State, where he spent three years as a backup. In 2018 he decided to leave the Buckeyes to LSU in search of a starting job.

Before he left, however, he did complete his degree in consumer and family financial services.

So Burrow is a graduate of Ohio State University.

Why do NFL players say their high school?

So why did Burrow say Athens High School instead of the school he graduated from or the school he led to a national championship?

It may be because of the Ohio connection. Burrow is trying to bring Cincinnati their first-ever Super Bowl, which would be extra special because he grew up in Ohio. Calling attention to his high school roots expresses where he came from and what the Super Bowl means to the people there.

A lot of NFL players use their introductions to shout out things that are special to them. Often, that means calling attention to their origins in high school or elsewhere.
