Finding a new starting quarterback should be the Colts’ top offseason priority, but they don’t have the picks required to replace Carson Wentz in the draft.

The Colts took a massive gamble on bringing in Carson Wentz to solidify the quarterback position and it hasn’t paid off. Unfortunately for GM Chris Ballard and the Indianapolis front office, the draft compensation given up in the Wentz deal will also prevent them from finding his successor in this year’s draft.

That doesn’t mean Wentz is going to be the team’s starting quarterback next season. The Colts will scour free agency and the trade market to upgrade the game’s most important position. It just means their draft plan will need to focus on other roster holes.

As usual, expect the Colts to go for substance over style whenever possible. That’s why their first pick of the 2022 NFL Draft will help solidify their team in the trenches.

Round 2: Zion Johnson

Johnson played left tackle admirably for Boston College last season but his professional future lies on the inside. Pairing him with Quinton Nelson could give the Colts one of the best starting guard duos in the entire league.

Johnson possesses an excellent combination of power and precision at the point of attack. He’s not a road grader at the guard position, but he has the agility required to get out and make blocks at the second level. The Colts will face a nervous wait to see if Johnson falls all the way down to them at No. 48.
