NFL Combine: Fastest 40 times ever for each position

Here are the fastest 40-yard dash times ever recorded at each position at the NFL Combine.
NFL Draft season is truly kicking off into high gear from March 1-7, as that is when the annual Scouting Combine takes place from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. Attention will be kept on the players expected to be taken during the first-round, but there are also some hidden gems that could be available for teams on the second and third days of the NFL Draft.
Perhaps the most anticipated event of the NFL Combine is the 40-yard dash, where prospects show off their speed. A fast time could help a player increase their stock heading into Draft Day.
You have probably seen the fastest times ever, but here are the fastest 40-times ever at each position. Those stats come courtesy of MockDraftable.
Fastest 40-time for a QB at the NFL Combine
Michael Vick is officially holds the record for the fastest 40-time for any quarterback who participated at the NFL Combine. In 2001, the Virginia Tech quarterback clocked in at 4.33-seconds. Vick was selected with the first-overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons.
Fastest 40-time for a RB at the NFL Combine
This is well known. Chris Johnson, running back out of East Carolina, broke the record for fastest 40-yard dash time at 4.24-seconds in 2008. It was a record that would stand for almost 10 years, before it was broken by this next individual. Johnson was drafted by the Tennessee Titans with the 24th-overall pick.
Fastest 40-time for a WR at the NFL Combine
John Ross III broke the internet in 2017 when he logged a 4.22-second 40-time. As a result, he know holds the record, a feat which ay very well never be broken. Ross was the second wide receiver to be selected in the 2017 NFL Draft, as he was drafted with the ninth-overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals.
Fastest 40-time for a TE at the NFL Combine
Vernon Davis holds the record for fastest 40-time recorded by a tight end at 4.38 seconds in 2006. The Maryland Terrapin was selected with the sixth-overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers.
Fastest 40-time for a OT at the NFL Combine
When it comes to offensive tackles, Terron Armstead is the fastest in NFL Combine history. Back in 2013, Armstead ran a 4.71-second 40 as a prospect out of Arkansas Pine-Bluff. Armstead was drafted in the third-round by the New Orleans Saints.
Fastest 40-time for an IOL at the NFL Combine
Chris Chester, center out of Oklahoma, logged a 4.83-second 40-time during the 2006 Combine. He broke the record previously set by Richie Incognito the year prior, who ran a 40-yard dash of 4.84-seconds. The Baltimore Ravens selected Chester in the second-round of the 2006 Draft.
Fastest 40-time for an DL at the NFL Combine
Montez Sweat broke the defensive end 40-yard dash record by running a 4.41-second 40-time in 2019. Sweat was selected with the 26th-overall pick by the now-Washington Commanders. He was the team’s second first-round selection, as the team took Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins with the No. 15 pick.
Fastest 40-time for a LB at the NFL Combine
Shaquem Griffin out of Central Florida attended the 2018 Combine and set the record for linebackers at the 40-yard dash by clocking in at 4.38-seconds. Griffin was selected in the fifth-round by the Seattle Seahawks.
Fastest 40-time for a CB at the NFL Combine
DeMarcus Van Dyke, a cornerback for the Miami Hurricanes, ran a 4.25-second dash in 2011. Van Dyke was selected in the third-round by the then-Oakland Raiders.
Fastest 40-time for a S at the NFL Combine
Ole Miss’ Zedrick Woods holds the fastest 40-yard dash time among safeties in Combine history, as he ran it at 4.29-seconds in 2019. Woods went undrafted that year, signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars before retiring prior to ever taking an NFL snap.
Fastest 40-time for a P at the NFL Combine
Mitch Wishnowsky, punter out of Utah, attended the 2019 event and ran a 4.63-second 40-yard dash. He was selected in the forth-round of that year’s NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.
Fastest 40-time for a K at the NFL Combine
Michael Badgley holds the fastest 40-yard-dash time among kickers, as he clocked in at 4.94-seconds. The Miami Hurricanes went undrafted, signing with the Indianapolis Colts as a free agent.
