The Washington Commanders are reportedly searching far and wide for a quarterback, including calling the Chiefs about Patrick Mahomes.

Most NFL teams are obsessed with finding their quarterback. It makes sense. Quarterbacks rule the NFL. The difference between the right one and wrong one is everything.

So of course the Washington Commanders are doing everything possible to sort out their less-than-stellar quarterback situation.

Their search included turning over every possible stone, apparently.

Commanders reportedly called Chiefs to inquire about Patrick Mahomes

“According to a source, Washington has reached out to every team to inquire about a quarterback’s availability and the cost,” John Keim reported on ESPN. “The team started its search with a list of 42 quarterbacks.”

Immediately, people like Pete Grathoff of the Kansas City Star put two and two together. Because calling “every team” to inquire about their QBs availability and cost would also mean calling up a team like the Chiefs to inquire about Patrick Mahomes.

And that’s utterly amazing to consider.

That’s the kind of thing that usually only happens in a video game like Madden. Sometimes it’s worth inquiring about a trade for a star quarterback just to see if you can swindle the AI. Only, this isn’t a video game and the Commanders were never going to actually get the chance to pull one over on Kansas City

It’s a shame there probably wasn’t a camera in the Chiefs’ offices to capture that moment. We can only hope an assistant or secretary comes out to say they heard raucous laughter coming from Brett Veach’s office one day and this finally explains what was so funny.

It would be fascinating to learn if Washington got any sort of answer on the cost of trading for Mahomes, undoubtedly one of the top quarterbacks and playmakers in the league. At the NFL Combine, Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians mused it would take five first-round picks for his team to even consider facilitating a trade for an unretired Tom Brady.

Can you imagine would kind of haul the Chiefs could reasonably ask for to let Mahomes go?
