Miami football is reportedly on the verge of hiring Dolphins legend Jason Taylor in an off-field role for Mario Cristobal’s staff.

Mario Cristobal is from Miami, so he knows all about the people who matter most to the city.

Jason Taylor is one of those figures as an absolute giant in the lore of the city and its sports teams.

Taylor is a Pro Football Hall of Famer who spent the majority of his career harassing opposing quarterbacks for the Dolphins. Now he’s going to help develop the next generation of Miami football stars.

Cristobal is set to hire Taylor as an off-field analyst for the Hurricanes this season, according to Gaby Urrutia of InsideTheU.

This will be Taylor’s first opportunity coaching in the college ranks. Since his retirement in 2011, he has kept himself busy with broadcasting and other endeavors.

He started coaching defensive line at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, moving up to be their defensive coordinator in 2020. Clearly, he’s done well in that role with three straight state titles at the 7A level.

Taylor isn’t the only NFL great who will be helping Cristobal turn Miami back into a college football powerhouse. Ed Reed is also in an off-field role with the Hurricanes under the new coaching staff.

Cristobal is winning the offseason with his hires so far. It doesn’t get much more popular than Jason Taylor and Ed Reed in Miami. They may not be able to coach players directly on the field, but their input should be invaluable for the program. They won’t hurt recruiting either.

The question is whether Cristobal can turn those hires into results. The Hurricanes have just one 10-win season since 2003.
