Patrick Mahomes laughs off being torched in a NFL Combine 40 overlay making him look slow.

An NFL Combine 40-yard dash overlay left Patrick Mahomes in the dust of Desmond Ridder, Marcus Mariota and Russell Wilson.

While Mahomes ran a 4.80 40 during the 2017 Scouting Combine, he was yards behind Ridder, Mariota and Wilson on their respective 40s. This overlay was brought to light because the Cincinnati quarterback bested Mariota, Wilson and Mahomes. Ridder patterns his game after the mobile Ryan Tannehill, so it is no surprise he ran a 4.49 40 at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine.

Though Mahomes had the slowest 40 of their four signal-callers in question, he has the best arm talent of the quarterbacking quartet.

Though Mahomes is shifty in the backfield, he was not drafted out of Texas Tech by the Kansas City Chiefs because of his mobility. It was his howitzer of a right arm and the Brett Favre comp that had Kansas City trade up to get him. Ridder will need his foot speed to give himself a shot at being a first-round pick this year. While Mariota went No. 2 overall, Wilson fell to the third round.

Not to say Mahomes will use this unflattering 40 overlay as motivation, but it serves as a reminder of how far he has come since the 2017 NFL Draft. As will probably be the case for Ridder, Mahomes only started one game as a rookie with the Chiefs. Though comparing Ridder to Mahomes would be foolish, if Ridder does go to the right organization, he can win a ton of games.

Ultimately, Mahomes ran a 4.80 40 five years ago, which is still faster than most people can do.
