Former Tar Heels star calls out Duke coach for poor sportsmanship

Following a loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels, a Duke Blue Devils assistant coach apparently refused to shake hands with Hubert Davis.

Justin Jackson, a former star for the North Carolina Tar Heels, believes one particular Duke Blue Devils assistant coach could do better with handling emotional rivalry losses.

In a video that has gone viral following the Blue Devils’ loss to the Tar Heels Saturday evening, it appears as if Chris Carrawell, an assistant for Duke, refused to shake hands with Hubert Davis, North Carolina’s head coach.

Davis reaches out for a customary hand shake that is a traditional sign of sportsmanship. Carrawell appears to pull his hand back and keeps walking right on past Davis. Sure, Duke ended up losing 94-81 to North Carolina in what was Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final home game, but that’s no excuse for this.

All Carrawell had to do was shake Hubert’s hand and he refused. Now Duke is getting plenty of attention and criticism.

It’s certainly a less-than-ideal situation for Carrawell and Duke.

It’s hard to blame Jackson (and so many others) for being frustrated with the way Carrawell handled this loss and the way he refused to even remotely engage with Davis. According to a report by The Charlotte Observer, Carrawell claimed that Davis “did not shake [Duke’s] hands before the game.”

However, as some have pointed out, Davis actually did shake hands with Coach K prior to the start of the game.

This isn’t the worst thing ever, but it sure is weird and it definitely is a bad look for the Blue Devils.
