Georgia football: Jordan Davis, Travon Walker make serious noise at NFL Combine

The Georgia football program dominated the NFL Scouting Combine on Saturday night with unreal showings out of defensive linemen Jordan Davis and Travon Walker.

Kirby Smart’s Georgia football program will set a record for most players drafted this year with guys like Jordan Davis and Travon Walker going in the first round.

Davis and linebacker Nakobe Dean were the two biggest names on the all-time great Dawgs defense that led Georgia to its first national championship in 41 years. They were unanimous All-Americans with Dean taking home the Butkus and Davis nabbing the Bednarik and the Outland. However, neither one is expected to be the first Dawg off the board, as that would be Walker.

With Walker absolutely tearing it up at the combine, there is no way he gets past the New York Giants at No. 7. The G-Men have their own pick at No. 5 and the Chicago Bears’ at No. 7 from the trade to move up to draft Justin Fields out of Ohio State.

Though there was some debate over if Davis would crack the top-32, he is a bona-fide lock to do so now, possibly pushing into the top-16 and firmly into the top-25.

Look for Dean and defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt to join Davis and Walker as first-round picks.

The crazy part in all this is two-fold. One, Georgia may have had more players going in the top-100 than pretty much any team ever, but none were expected to potentially crack the top-10. Walker is guaranteed to do that now. Dean has an outside shot at it, but he is probably getting picked in the teens. Look for Davis and Wyatt to come off the board somewhere in the mid-20s or early 30s.

The second thing that is remarkable is the best talent on that defense from a year ago is not even draft eligible. Jalen Carter returns to Athens for his junior season looking to fill the giant shoes of Davis, Walker and Wyatt along the Georgia defensive line. As with Walker, there is a great chance Carter goes top-10 next or even cracks the top-five like Walker is about to do. Carter is special.

Ultimately, Saturday night was about as good of a recruiting pitch for Georgia football as Smart could have ever hoped for. The NFL Combine is set up to create a level playing field for all draft prospects, regardless of where they played football at. Though combine freaks can come from anywhere, having two defensive line teammates dominate Indianapolis on the same night is nuts.

Look for one-eighth of the first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft to be former Georgia players.
