The Chicago Bears coaching staff has concerns about Justin Fields’ elongated throwing motion.

While Justin Fields could be the franchise quarterback the Chicago Bears have always wanted, he does need to refine his loopy throwing motion.

Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports Fields’ mechanics are a discussion point within the Bears’ new coaching staff. Though he has a strong baseball background and throws the ball with great touch and anticipation, his elongated throwing motion has been an issue at times, ever since his days as a high school star in Kennesaw, Georgia. Fortunately, his throwing motion can be altered.

Even better, former Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy is Matt Eberflus’ new offensive coordinator in Chicago. He worked with one of the greatest throwers of the football in the always mechanically sound, four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers. Clearly, throwing mechanics will be paramount in the new regime of Bears football. This ultimately serves Fields’ development.

If he can improve his release time, Fields has every chance to be as good as he was at Ohio State.

What this really comes down to is if Fields can refine his motion a bit, it will set him and the Bears franchise up for success for hopefully the next decade. Though he still went high in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, his elongated throwing motion was an issue playing in the SEC initially at Georgia, as well as during his rookie year with the Bears last season. His motion has to be refined.

While it does not serve the Bears’ coaching staff to completely break him down mechanically, as Fields was a special player coming out of college, every split second matters when it comes to the NFL. Chicago has long been one of the harder professional cities to rifle the pigskin in. Though Fields has enough arm talent to overcome a harsh winter climate, he must get the ball out quicker.

Ultimately, these next three years will tell the tale of Fields in the NFL. If he responds to good coaching and has a competent front office building a great team around him, who is to say the Bears cannot contend for a Super Bowl before the end of his rookie contract? Should it be more perpetual chaos and nonsense synonymous with the Bears, it may impossible to fully overcome.

By hiring Getsy away from the Packers, it is clear the new Bears staff values passing mechanics.
