The LSU quarterback depth chart made a major change with Arizona State’s Jayden Daniels joining the fray. But will he start right away?

It’s a new era for LSU football with Brian Kelly at the helm. So it’s fitting they look likely to have a new quarterback leading the way as well.

Former Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels transferred to the Tigers after three years starting for the Sun Devils.

Is it a foregone conclusion for him to start in Baton Rouge as well?

LSU quarterback depth chart for 2022

  1. Jayden Daniels
  2. Myles Brennan
  3. Garrett Nussmmeier
  4. Walker Howard

Simply put, yes, Daniels should be the starter for the Tigers in 2022.

Even though Myles Brennan had starting experience with LSU and is older than Daniels, he trails behind the transfer in real game experience. Brennan has appeared in 20 games in his career but only three of those were starts. Daniels has started 19 games in his three years of college action.

Brennan has thrown 201 attempts completing 60.2 percent of his passes. Daniels has attempted 723 passes while completing 62.4 percent. Brennan has 13 career touchdowns with six interceptions. Daniels has thrown 32 touchdowns with 13 interceptions.

Daniels has an edge as a rusher as well with 1,288 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. Brennan doesn’t boast the same mobility.

The ASU transfer has better production, more experience and a higher ceiling. And since Brian Kelly is starting from scratch on offense, none of the quarterbacks have the advantage of being more familiar with the system than the others.

There are wildcards in the competition to take into account. Daniels will have to adjust to life in the SEC. Plus, redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier and incoming freshman Walker Howard will want to throw a wrench in expectations and grab the starting job themselves.

It’s certainly a possibility. However, unseating Daniels should be tall order.
