With Russell Wilson being traded to the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs fans are looking to the team to sign Tyrann Mathieu before it’s too late.

When the news broke that Aaron Rodgers would, in fact, remain in Green Bay, Chiefs fans reveled in the victory. This meant that the four-time NFL MVP would not be coming to their division to play for the Denver Broncos, which was the widely-held rumor.

Instead, Chiefs fans were hit with an ominous bombshell a few hours later. The Broncos won’t be getting Rodgers—they’ll be getting Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson instead.

With Mr. Unlimited now in the division on a Broncos team very much poised to make a playoff run—even more so if Von Miller returns—Chiefs fans are reminded that their team has yet to make an offer to defensive stalwart Tyrann Mathieu.

Mathieu, who has been “the heart and soul of the Chiefs defense for the past 3 years”, is reportedly going to test free agency as he flirts with the idea of returning to his hometown of New Orleans. Mathieu responded to a post about his interest in the Saints with two fire emojis, indicating his interest with the Louisiana team.

With Wilson now on the block, the Chiefs need to carefully consider their roster-building this offseason as they make critical moves in response to Wilson’s arrival.

Chiefs pressured to re-sign Tyrann Mathieu in wake of Russell Wilson arrival

With the Chiefs having to play the Broncos at least twice a year (and very possibly again in a Week 18 matchup), Mahomes vs. Wilson will undoubtedly make great television.

But the Chiefs are going to have to defend against Wilson’s bombs with a safety like Mathieu, who recently went to his second consecutive Pro Bowl with the Chiefs. The Saints are in rebuild mode after losing their three best players and their revered head coach, so they could make an aggressive play to woo Mathieu away from the Chiefs. And if Kansas City doesn’t make him a competitive offer soon, the pull from home could be strong enough to lure Mathieu away.

Chiefs fans were laughing at seeing the Broncos lose out on Rodgers, but if the Broncos get Wilson and the Chiefs lose Mathieu, it could bring about a new era in the AFC West: a resurrection of the Broncos dominance that made them division winners from 2011-2015.
