A new report reveals that former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was upset his team was headed to the Super Bowl while he was injured.

Football is often regarded as the perfect team sport because the offense, defense and special teams are separated into three distinct phases. Players constantly rely on one another for success, which makes any season culminating in a Super Bowl nothing short of a miracle.

When a team is on the path to the big game, it’s due to the contributions of all involved, including key players injured along the way. This was true during the Philadelphia Eagles’ historic Super Bowl run in 2017, when Wentz helped to bring the team to the playoffs before tearing his ACL. Nick Foles delivered the ultimate victory, and it was Foles who was commemorated with a bronze statue. A recent report indicates that Wentz was less than gracious watching his team win the first Super Bowl for the franchise.

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane, Wentz exhibited troubling character defects in that moment that prompted his trade to Indianapolis last March. Per McLane’s column:

"“Wentz struggled with accountability in his last three seasons in Philadelphia and it hurt his standing with teammates and coaches. But it was the torn ACL that ended his 2017 season and denied him the Super Bowl run that revealed character defects and affected him in certain corners of the locker room.Sometime before the championship game, Wentz voiced his displeasure with the Eagles’ success to a group of other injured players, sources with direct knowledge of the incident said. One of the players immediately confronted him and the two eventually had to be separated.Wentz certainly had his supporters or those that sympathized with the obstacles he faced in Philly. If he was more successful, others would have likely been willing to overlook some of his personality quirks.”"

Even though that locker room moment is a red flag on Wentz’ leadership ability, the No. 2 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft still won a Super Bowl ring, a Pro Bowl nod, and a Second-team All-Pro in that 2017 season.

And still, the Eagles chose to keep Wentz over Foles to lead their team for the next three seasons before an abysmal downward spiral in 2020. Wentz still enjoyed his status with a fresh start in Indianapolis paired with former Eagles coordinator Frank Reich. Once again, the rest of Wentz’ team (namely Jonathan Taylor) was forced to carry the team when Wentz could not deliver later in the season. With their playoff hopes on the line, the Colts lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars 26-11, giving the Jags their third win of the season.

The story about Wentz comes into play as the Colts reportedly contemplate trading him. If Wentz would rather watch his team lose without him than win a Super Bowl in spite of his injury, it’s possible that teams may finally give up on letting this former first-round pick lead an entire franchise.
