Nick Wittgren picked the St. Louis Cardinals over interest from double-digits teams hoping to add the reliever to their bullpen.

Free-agent reliever Nick Wittgren and the St. Louis Cardinals are in agreement on a one-year contract, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Wittgren, 30, drew interest from a dozen teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers and San Francisco Giants, sources said.

Nick Wittgren is another bullpen upgrade for the St. Louis Cardinals

Wittgren, who has a 3.75 career ERA, ultimately chose the Cardinals because of 1) the opportunity for meaningful innings in their bullpen and 2) because he lives 10 minutes from their spring training complex in Jupiter, FL.

Entering the offseason, the Cardinals had prioritized addressing their bullpen. In adding Drew VerHagen and now Wittgren, they have done that.

But they are expected to continue to survey the free-agent market, sources said, with Joe Kelly, Ryan Tepera and Robert Gsellman all players who fit what they look for in relievers.
