Notre Dame basketball did what Notre Dame football couldn’t: Beat Alabama

While the Alabama Crimson Tide has been able to get some impressive wins over the Notre Dame football team, the Notre Dame basketball team came through Friday.
The Notre Dame football program has struggled against the Alabama Crimson Tide in recent history. However, the Notre Dame basketball team has no such issues taking care of the Crimson Tide. The Fighting Irish just throttled Alabama in the NCAA Tournament, beating the Crimson Tide in the second round.
Vengeance! Retribution! A big win over the Crimson Tide, a team that the football team can’t seem to beat! The Fighting Irish now have bragging rights over a foe that has thwarted Notre Dame on two very notable occasions in the past decade by a combined score of 73-28.
This 78-64 basketball win over Alabama in the NCAA tournament has to feel pretty good for Notre Dame fans!
Of course, it seems unlikely that most Alabama fans are going to care too much about this one.

And sure, it’s a ton of fun to make all sorts of jokes about the Notre Dame football team failing and falling short on big stages and being incapable of getting big wins over really anyone. That’s a ton of fun to do.
But way back in the day when dinosaurs roamed the earth, the Fighting Irish was actually able to beat Alabama.
It’s probably pretty important to note how the Notre Dame football team actually does have more wins against Alabama than the Crimson Tide has against the Fighting Irish. At one point in this series, Notre Dame racked up four wins in four meetings with the Crimson Tide. But, it’s been a while. Those wins came between the years of 1973 and 1980.
A lot has happened since then. The college football landscape has changed drastically. Like those two humungous Alabama wins that have happened in the past 10 years.
