5 players Packers should draft in the first round
4. Jameson Williams
Drafting Williams in Round 1 would represent a major gamble by the Packers’ front office. He has the natural talent of a top-10 pick but the knee injury he suffered during his final season at Alabama means he might start the regular season on the shelf.
Green Bay has an obvious need for a wide receiver (or receivers) that can help them right away. Even so, exercising a little patience for Williams might be worth the wait. This is a team that’s losing a bona fide superstar on the outside. Taking a big swing on a replacement might be the only way to get anything close to the production they enjoyed from Adams in recent years.
Williams has the athleticism and polish to be a weapon on all sorts of routes at the NFL level. His ability to take the top off opposing secondaries would certainly appeal to a quarterback like Rodgers that likes to take deep shots down the field.
That doesn’t mean Williams is a one-trick pony as a receiver. He has the quickness required to produce a lot of separation on short and intermediate routes as well. He might have as much upside as any receiver in this class and that will put him in the frame for the Packers if he falls all the way down to No. 22.
