Patrick Mahomes still has the biggest contract in NFL history despite Aaron Rodgers inking a new deal.

Aaron Rodgers will return next season with the Green Bay Packers. Rodgers signed a four-year, $200 million deal with the team, making him the highest-paid player annually at any position in the NFL. Rodgers is slated to make $50 million annually. Although Rodgers’ new contract makes him the highest-paid player this upcoming season, Patrick Mahomes still holds the crown for the biggest contract in NFL history.

Patrick Mahomes’ payout is massive

Mahomes signed a 10-year contract worth over $500 million with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020 making him the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history. The contract keeps Mahomes in Kansas City until 2031 and includes $477 million in guaranteed mechanisms with the option to opt out if those mechanisms are not met.

With this deal, Mahomes became the second-highest-paid athlete in sports history.

Following behind Mahomes, with one of the largest NFL Contracts in history, is Buffalo Bills Quarterback, Josh Allen. Allen signed a six-year extension with the Bills worth $258 million, keeping Allen with the Bills through the 2028 season.

Do guarantees matter?

Yes, guarantees matter. Guarantees are money the team is contractually obligated to pay the player. When it comes to contracts in the NFL, guaranteed money is likely a negotiating point because anything can happen during the season that prevents the player from performing.

Mahomes’ lucrative contract included a guarantee of $63 million at signing, $103.5 million paid to him in March of 2021, and $141.4 million guaranteed this March.

Whatever way you want to slice it Mahomes’ contract is a big deal and Chiefs fans can thank management for locking him up for years to come.
