If Russell Wilson wants to cook in Denver, Broncos are prepared to let him
By John Buhler
If Russell Wilson wants to cook, Nathaniel Hackett is not going to be the one to stop him on the Denver Broncos coaching staff.
Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett is a staunch believer in the Let Russ Cook movement.
With Denver dealing for Russell Wilson in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks, why would they not let him cook? That was the seminal reason why he wanted out of Seattle in the first place. 70-year-old Pete Carroll was set in his Martyball ways, and Wilson wanted to try his hand in the kitchen. Who is a first-time head coach like Hackett to try to stop him from cooking?
Fate would have it that the man who will allow Russ to cook is the son of the head coach his former head coach replaced as the head coach of the USC Trojans. You cannot possibly write a crazier Hollywood script!
Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett will Let Russ Cook
Let’s be real. What other option does Hackett have? Though he was a great offensive coordinator with the Green Bay Packers and a solid one with the Jacksonville Jaguars before that, a big reason why he was hired to lead the Broncos was his rapport with Aaron Rodgers. While Rodgers decided to stay in America’s Dairyland, “Mr. Unlimited” wants to have all of his potential fully tapped into.
Denver has the second longest playoff drought in the NFL. The Broncos have not been to the postseason since winning Super Bowl 50. The only team who has missed the playoffs with greater regularity than the Broncos is the flightless New York Jets. When you are being compared to the Jets, you are going to have a bad time. Looks like the bad times are over in Broncos Country.
Ultimately, the Broncos need to make the playoffs in the first year of the Wilson/Hackett partnership. Whether they get in as the No. 1 seed with home-field advantage or get in by the skin of their teeth as the No. 7, it does not matter. The Broncos traded for Wilson to be relevant in the deep AFC once again. If they are not ready to let him cook, why did the give up the farm for him?
Here is to Denver getting its Michelin stars in 2022, as opposed to staying a tire fire offensively.
