Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry and NBA Legend Shaq can now add Oscar winners to their resumes.

Steph Curry and Shaquille O’Neal won their first Oscar Sunday night as executive producers on The Queen of Basketball. The film took home the award for best short subject documentary. The short film is centered around the story of Lusia Harris, the first female drafted to the NBA.

Harris’ accomplishments include helping Delta State University win three straight national championships and leading the 1976 women’s Olympics team to a silver medal, where she became the first woman to make a basket in Olympic competition. She was drafted in the seventh round of the 1977 draft by the New Orleans Jazz, even though she did not try out for the team due to being pregnant.

She is regarded as one of the pioneers of women’s basketball but not too many people knew about her, including Shaq himself as per ESPN.

"“I didn’t know who she was at first,” O’Neal said earlier this month"

But after watching the film, Shaq wanted to be involved because he felt her story needed to be told, according to Deadline.

"“When I saw [the film], it kind of made me cry,” Shaq told Deadline in January, just a day before Harris’s sudden passing. “I said to myself, ‘I got to do whatever it takes to bring this story to the world…’ I want to see Lusia on the Oscars, the red carpet, want to see this woman get her shot. I want her to have that moment where she gets to talk to an even bigger audience, to be able to inspire the future generations.”"

When accepting the award for Best Short Documentary, Director Ben Proudfoot, reiterated the importance of female athletes and the need for their stories to be told.

"“If there is anyone out there who doubts that there is an audience for female athletes and questions whether their stories are valuable or entertaining or important … let this Academy Award be the answer,” Proudfoot said at the award ceremony in Los Angeles."

Shaq and Curry now become the newest NBA players to have won an Academy Award. They join Kobe Bryant who won an Oscar for his short animated film, Dear Basketball, and Kevin Durant and Mike Conley who picked up an award for their contributions on Two Distant Strangers.
