The latest Jacob deGrom injury update is even more bad news for the New York Mets franchise.

The New York Mets could be without starting pitcher Jacob deGrom for the next few months.

deGrom has inflammation on his right scapula from a stress reaction. He has been shut down for the next four weeks and will be re-evaluated in May. The best-case scenario for him to return to the Mets’ rotation would be in about eight weeks, meaning he could make his 2022 MLB season debut in early June. Until then, New York will likely have to tread water without their ace pitcher.

While his talent is undeniable, deGrom is in the midst of having his career derailed by injuries.

The good news for the Mets is they made a big splash in free agency by acquiring a future hall-of-famer in Max Scherzer. Though he is dealing with an injury of his own, Scherzer will now have to carry the Mets’ rotation in deGrom’s extended absence. On paper, the Mets can be an NL Wild Card team and possibly push the Atlanta Braves in the division. Too bad paper is not what win games.

Regardless, the Mets cannot afford to lose ground out of the gate if they want to prevent Atlanta from winning its fifth division crown in a row. Factor in how playoff-starved the Philadelphia Phillies are and the NL East may be a lot more competitive than many people expect. All the while, the Mets do not have much margin for error if deGrom is on the mend for the bulk of the season.

Ultimately, it just stinks to see a transcendent talent fall apart at the seams due to injury. When he is able to toe the rubber every fifth day, deGrom is virtually unhittable. Unfortunately, there is a chance his best baseball is firmly behind him. New York should not rush him back out onto the diamond, but not having the best player available for the first third of the season is so crushing.

The pressure is already beginning to mount for the Mets after the latest deGrom injury update.
