Rory McIlroy made a crazy run at the lead in the final round of The Masters and completed it with a sick bunker shot that every fan was celebrating.

Coming into Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club, Rory McIlroy didn’t figure to be part of the major story. After pedestrian play over the first 54 holes, he was sitting at just 1-over, 10 shots behind the leader, Scottie Scheffler.

Then, we saw just what Rory is capable of when he has every part of his game working. On Sunday, he came out and blitzed the field with tremendous play from start to finish. He walked onto the 18th hole with a 7-under round working but put his tee shot in the bunker. His second shot went bunker-to-bunker with an impossible angle at the hole given the undulations and slopes of the green.

Impossible for a normal person, at least.

Instead, McIlroy played a tremendous shot to the top of the slope and let it trickle down towards the hole — and then it kept rolling until it found the bottom of the cup to create an electric scene on the final green.

With Scheffler playing smart, precise golf, the mammoth moment for McIlroy was likely never going to be enough for him to capture the elusive Green Jacket that would allow him to complete the career grand slam.

However, with his best Masters round to date and likely his best finish at the tournament of his career, suffice it to say that Rory left the course with as good of a feeling as you can have without getting the victory.
